Il recupero conservativo ed estetico della eccezionale testimonianza della scultura fiorentina del Quattrocento, uscito per la massima parte dalla bottega, e in una limitata ma eccelsa parte dalla mano di Andrea del Verrocchio, è tra gli ultimi frutti della lunga stagione di operosità culturale che ha caratterizzato a Firenze e in Toscana l'inizio degli anni Novanta, con la manifestazione per il centenario della morte di Lorenzo il Magnifico.
